Vancouver Maker Workshops You Won’t Want to Miss
Put these DIY events on your to-do list.
There are few things more simply satisfying in life than creating something beautiful with your own hands. In fitting with the introduction of our new Designer of the Year: Maker category, here are just a few of the hands-on maker workshops available around the city for you to explore your own creative side.
Roll up you sleeves, grab a glass of wine, and embrace the perfectly imperfect art of shibori. Artisan and designer Sophena Kwon, in collaboration with Maiwa School of Textiles, began her Indigo Social events as a way to build community while introducing people to the ancient technique. Now running several events a year, Kwon’s workshops take you through a brief overview of the methods and history behind the art of indigo, before turning you loose to chat, sip, and experiment with a multitude of fabric binding methods. Nervous about your how your creation will turn out? Don’t be. Whether you decide to stick with a modest polkadot motif or go for a wild Rorschach-esqe design, it is virtually impossible to go wrong.

Learn the ins and outs of tapestry weaving from Victoria-based textile artist Lucy Poskitt, whose work combines traditional methods with contemporary design. Poskitt’s relaxed teaching style is sure to inspire you to create a piece you’re proud to show off, but just incase you don’t nail it on the first take, you can always perfect your craft at home. Workshops include all the essentials, including a locally made maple hand loom, that are yours to keep.
Make your grandmother proud by learning the art of calligraphy from local expert Christina Luo at Fox & Flourish. No experience necessary and everyone—lefties included—is welcome. These small group workshops, held in the comfort of Fox & Flourish’s cozy Gastown studio space, guide you through basics from proper posture to developing your individual writing style. Feeling shy about practicing your chicken scratch in public? They offer private lessons too.
