It’s rare that an appliance inspires a kitchen’s design. But when that appliance is an iconic Lacanche range, it’s hard not to make it the center of attention. Designer Karla Barton of McBurney Junction built a section of drywall around the range, highlighting it with wallpaper and a travertine tile backsplash. Two islands, statement lighting and a symmetrical layout round out the rest of this warm, French country-style space.

The client had bought the beautiful black Lacanche stove before starting the design process and wanted her new kitchen to revolve around it. A custom drywall surround covered in Farrow and Ball wallpaper immediately draws the eye.

The wallpaper ties the range into the rest of the design. Barton had leftover travertine tile from the kitchen floor cut into tile for the backsplash.

Just a single table or island would’ve taken away from the symmetrical layout the client wanted. So Barton put in two islands—one for prep and cleaning, one for eating.

Statement lighting was another item on the client’s wish list. These Restoration Hardware chandeliers worked well with the kitchen’s mix of French-country and industrial styles.

A wallpapered pantry and integrated refrigerator mirror the range surround on the other side of the kitchen. Barton used drywall and wallpaper instead of woodwork to cut down on cost.

A custom banquette next to the range adds a welcome curve.
