Trend Alert: 3 Hot Colour Palettes for 2018

Sincerity, Affinity or Connectivity—which of Sherwin-Williams’s 2018 colour schemes do you love most?

Whether it’s a coffee table you find at an antique store or a hand-knotted rug that you purchase on a whim, inspiration for your next interior design project can come from anywhere. For Sue Wadden, director of colour marketing at Sherwin-Williams, inspiration struck while watching one of her fave Netflix series. “Have you seen Chef’s Table?” she laughs. The docu-series, now approaching its fourth season, follows the lives of the world’s most renowned chefs, giving viewers an inside look at their kitchens, homes and culture. There’s something distinct about the way the food is described by those who have a passion for creating and eating it, she adds, “”I love it—the cinematography, the sounds.”

In an effort to bring this same passion to home decor, Wadden created three unique palettes for Sherwin-Williams’ 2018 colour forecast. Each of the themes—Sincerity, Affinity and Connectivity—draw inspiration from global trends, fashion, nature and technology. Like food, paint can be a transformative experience for people, setting the mood and tone throughout an entire home. Take a peek at Wadden’s colour stories below—and the paints you can use to get the looks at home.

1. Sincerity

Minimalism is still as trendy as ever: “Less is more as we declutter and move possessions into the cloud,” says Wadden. “With the Sincerity palette, silence is no longer empty, but instead is rare and rich with possibility.” The palette, inspired by the ideas of daily meditation, fluid movements and creating peace in one’s space, consists of calming hues of hazy green, off-white, rusty red and sand. “Sincerity is about mindful living and creating an environment to disconnect and recharge,” says Wadden. “Soft neutrals, greens and sanctuary pinks work together to create harmony.”

2. Affinity

Celebrating culture, travelling and wanderlust are the key ideas behind the inspiration of this palette—consisting of bold yellow, indigo blue, muted browns and bright fuchsia, it’s all about the experiences we have—and the artifacts we collect along the way. “We’re remapping our sense of community—landlocked cities are becoming global hubs of crafts and gastronomy,” says Wadden. “Home and car sharing, as well as e-learning have created a culture of everyday nomadism for the wanderlust-obsessed.”

3. Connectivity

“In Silicon Valley, Austin, Berlin and Beijing, techies are the new hippies,” says Wadden. “Connectivity is modern and playful, bringing in dark watery tones of blue that are balanced with neutrals, warm yellow and energetic purples.” The colour story pictured above puts an emphasis on the themes of virtual reality, youthfulness and technology thanks to it’s bold colours and metallic accents.
