Playful Kitchen Stool
Calgary designer reinvents the kitchen stool to be a thing of comfort, beauty and a little fun.
I had the pleasure of meeting furniture designer Sumer Singh of Mtharu the last time I was in Calgary, when I got a sneak peek of his new collection over a glass of his wife’s homemade chai. He’ll be opening a new furniture store, Kartār, on December 1 in Calgary, a curated collection of both his own designs and furniture and home accents made in wood, concrete, metal, glass, ceramics and textiles from other local designers. An engineer turned designer, Singh has a talent with metal, as his Fe stools demonstrate: made from a single piece of black steel, the stools are both comfortable and playful—the user can rock back and forth as they chat with the chef in the kitchen. And though it can be kitted out with a leather or cowhide jacket, it’s also surprisingly warm on its own: the material has the unique property of taking on the temperature of its surroundings. A gorgeous signature piece in a modern design.
Fe stool, from $1,056, available online at sumersingh.com, and at Kartār, 1502 – 11 St. SW, Calgary, as of December 1.
