Current trends in lighting and plumbing fixtures help you turn your home into the sanctuary you deserve.
Hagen Pendant by Hudson Valley
Now more than ever, home is a safe haven that instills a sense of reassurance and comfort. We wanted to discover how to bring a sense of connection and ease into any space, so we asked the experts at ROBINSON's Calgary showroom how to create the ultimate sanctuary at home.
Current trends in lighting and plumbing embrace this notion of comfort, says Barb Renaud, interior design consultant and outside sales for ROBINSON's Calgary showroom. You can achieve this with mixing and matching, as well as a placing an emphasis on approachable and soothing styles.

Warm Gold
Gold finishes are a tried and true classic, but we're starting to see a softer side in both lighting and plumbing fixtures, Renaud says. Gold with warm honey tones and a brushed finish add a sense of softness. Mixing and matching metal fixtures can give the home a unique and eclectic feel. Warm metals add a sense of richness when placed with cooler metals such as silver and chrome. In neutral spaces, gold fixtures pair well with grey, matte black or stark white cabinetry for an eye-catching pop of contrast. However, remember to keep it subtle, she adds. Even though warm and cool tones are both present in a room, they should never compete for attention.

Soft Pastels
A muted colour palette provides a calming effect with the ability to transform a room into a peaceful sanctuary. The most popular pastel colours in lighting include soft hues such as millennial pink, robin egg blue and creamy mint, says Brooklyn Unsworth, project coordinator at ROBINSON's Calgary showroom.¯They work best as a pendant light over a kitchen island, a pair of scones over bedside tables, or a flush mount over a stairway to add a pop of colour. They also pair well with a more laidback aesthetic featuring materials such as wicker, rattan or jute for a soothing look. This trend transitions seamlessly with coastal living and transitional spaces. A California coastal vibe can be created by mixing pastel blue fixtures and accent pieces that feature natural materials, Unsworth says.

Modern Farmhouse
The modern farmhouse trend continues to hold a strong grip in lighting and plumbing, mixing a blend of vintage and modern while taking inspiration from a much simpler time. In lighting, the oversizing of fixtures by 10-15% creates a unique style statement, featured best when incorporating two large pendants or three medium sized ones together over a kitchen island. Industrial style wall sconces are also a modern farmhouse classic, offering a balanced blend of rustic and refined. With form and function in mind, many have the ability to move the shade to cast light in different directions and feature recycled materials such as aluminum and copper. This aesthetic is an overall favourite in the kitchen, showcased the best through kitchen faucets and sinks. Apron sinks are not only stylish, but theyre also a practical option made to tackle food prep and dishwashing in a family home, says Renaud. The combination of brass or stainless steel plumbing fixtures with an apron sink creates a polished look that's beautiful and functional for years to come.

Matte Black
Matte black continues to be one of the biggest trends across all leading brands in lighting and plumbing. Modern enthusiasts will appreciate the sleek and minimalist look this style brings, while pairing it with warm and cozy accents. This trend showcases the best with light, bright and airy spaces. In particular, white marble countertops and a sleek matte black faucet creates a stylish contrast in the kitchen or bathroom. It also helps to unify cabinet hardware, adding weight to an otherwise neutral aesthetic.
Black plumbing fixtures are also very versatile and can match with a variety of fixtures and accessories in the home. You can mix and match a black sink with a range of fixtures, including stainless steel, gold and even matte black, Unsworth says. For a timeless look, mix warm fixtures, including matte black, brushed golds and copper, with more traditional, cooler metals such as stainless steel and chrome.
