Travel an hour from downtown Toronto and you’ll find yourself in farm country. And if you’re lucky, you’ll experience said farm country from the comfort of this particular former horse stable, located on a 65-acre agricultural site in the small village of Kendal. Quietly luxurious but still imbued with rustic charm, The Barn is an event space shaped by Vancouver design studio &Daughters (winners of our 2025 Robert Ledingham Memorial Award). Principals Darcy Hanna and Emma Sims restored the 1930s livestock barn and added bathrooms, a bar and a commercial kitchen, guests can assemble in the inviting concrete-and-stone foyer to lounge on the built-in sofa or warm themselves by the Stuv wood-burning stove, before ascending an Ontario pine staircase to the hayloft. Glass-paned metal swing doors connect that entryway to the covered courtyard, which in turn connects the space with the meadows below; thoughtfully sourced local antiques peppered throughout, meanwhile, help connect it all to history.
