Anyone with kids knows that the aesthetic of bedrooms and mud rooms are forever in flux, but designer Christina Smith of Houndz knows well the playful balance of functional form and long-lasting fashion, especially when it comes to her bold and modern floating armoire, Chloë ($1,500). The fabricated metal design mimics the upright, arched shape of a standalone armoire, but its open-faced, floating form makes it a showstopping space for kids and parents alike to hang their coats, jackets and purses. The hooks and shelves of this aluminum armoire (powder-coated in a bright primary red) curve to sit at different heights to allow even little ones to reach a place to rest their goods. The offbeat furniture piece’s floating nature gives way for more open floor space, making it a space-saving delight, and if it does, indeed, meet its aesthetic end, the aluminum can be recycled. As Smith explains, “Should the design reach its lifecycle, the material can be returned into the supply chain.”
