A pair of Saskatoon designers brings the hotel luxe look home.
After years spent exploring some of the most exclusive accommodations in the world, the Saskatoon-based owners of this luxe bathroom—a pair working in the hospitality industry—tapped designers Curtis Elmy and Trevor Ciona of Atmosphere Interior Design to transform their master ensuite into their own five-star space. Of all their destinations, the homeowners’ top spot is the Aria in Las Vegas. “It’s Vegas, but not the gaudy side,” says Elmy, who channelled the look into Atmosphere’s design for the space. “It’s dramatic, it’s elegant, it’s warm.”Atmosphere started by decking out the spacious room—200 square feet all told—in elegant creams and browns, incorporating natural travertine, dark wood and custom glass tiles. They then added the elements that would create a welcoming retreat: a tapered, rectangular tub is bathed in light that trickles in through a floor-to-ceiling textured glass window; a roomy steam shower is kitted out with a rain shower head and dual benches; a custom makeup area is built right into the wenge-wood vanity.Though the opulent Cole and Son wallpaper is the focal point of the room now, the team at Atmosphere waited a year after the bathroom was finished to install it. “Wallpaper is unexpected in a bathroom, but it was easier to convince the homeowners to try it after they had lived in the space as is and could fully envision it,” Elmy explains. “The room has evolved.” The Pros KnowAtmosphere Design’s top 5 tips for a showstopping bath.1. Add a little sparkle with custom glass tile—here, a tiled feature wall nicely frames a mounted television. 2. Skip the shelving and install drawers instead for easy access to anything that’s tucked out of sight. 3. Drape sheer fabric in front of textured or frosted privacy glass to soften the look of the raw glass. 4. Stash towels in a rolling bar cart—it’ll double as a place to rest a glass of wine during a long, leisurely soak. 5. Use ring pulls in place of knobs or handles to give your vanity the look of well-crafted furniture. Just BreatheThe travertine-clad steam shower includes an aromatherapy feature that infuses the steam with eucalyptus for a soothing home spa treatment. The 10-foot ceilings make the large bathroom feel even bigger, so Atmosphere installed a glittering chandelier (below) to help centre the space—and to add another hit of luxury.
