For interior designer Harpreet Deol, the ideal custom vendor is like a design partner, not just a supplier taking orders.

“I can specify where a piece was built, know who touched it and how it will perform over time,” says Deol, the principal designer for Nesting Design in the Lower Mainland. “It’s nice to have confidence that the final piece is going to match your intent before you physically get it.”

Deol is just one of countless other designers in Western Canada who are increasingly choosing locally crafted custom furniture for its intentionality, efficiency, quality and ability to bring practically any inspiration to life.

More homeowners want meaningful pieces that last—moving away from disposable, mass market furniture—and to support Canadian makers. Designers are responding with bespoke pieces from local brands like Kavuus.

Operating since 2009, Kavuus is a custom furniture brand based in Delta that creates pieces like sofas, chairs and sectionals.

Production is completed in the company’s B.C. warehouse—from framing to upholstery. That means designers can also tailor pieces to fit unique floor plans or to their client’s aesthetics.

For a recent project in the Fraser Valley, Deol worked with Kavuus for a fully custom sectional. “I needed pieces that could marry modern, quiet luxury aesthetics with pet-friendly quality and lasting durability,” she recalls. “Kavuus gave me the freedom to set the proportions exactly how I wanted them.”

Deol adjusted elements like seat depth or arm thickness to tailor the fit to the client’s comfort needs and overall scale for the living space. She was also able to change the leg style and stain from ebony to walnut to match the project’s palette.

“When a piece is tailored to your space and your lifestyle, it elevates the entire home,” she says. These were customization points that truly mattered to Deol and her client—proportions and architectural details.

For another project, she used the brand’s extensive designer resources to customize Kavuus’ popular Aim sectional. “They were even able to give me a custom render to show me what it would look like with the stain and the fabric that I had picked,” she says. Kavuus offers complimentary swatch kits so designers can assess how a material will fit a project. These consultations can be done virtually, in-home or on-site with clients. “It was very easy,” Deol adds.

Intentional Creations

Custom also opens a world of design inspiration. Many silhouettes and proportions from international designs can be significantly more expensive or come with several-month lead times. Kavuus can create these inspirations locally, with customization, on a timeline that works for clients and designers.

“Custom used to feel like a luxury tier, accessible only for high-budget projects,” says Deol, “but brands like Kavuus have made customization far more attainable. They’re able to offer tailored pieces without the markup associated with imported custom furniture.”

As more homeowners value quality, longevity and supporting local, West Coast design is evolving toward comfort, authenticity and craftsmanship. “The ability to walk into the local showroom, touch the materials and adjust things in real time reminds you that furniture is still a craft,” says Deol.
