We already shared our wish list with you, but that was of products we hope to one day be able to personally recommend from experience. This list, on the other hand, is a round-up of the home goods—some for the kitchen, some for the living room—that we spent our own hard-earned money on this year and heartily endorse. Read on for our editors’ favourite home purchases of the year.

The Home Accessories That Our Editors Personally Recommend

Ikea Varmblixt Lamp, $80

I got double-influenced on this one. I first spotted the playful, doughnut shaped light in small-space consultant Alison Mazurek‘s home during a tour for our sister publication Vancouver magazine, and loved both it’s warm glow and pleasing shape. Then, while over at contributing editor Alyssa Hirose‘s home for some cocktails (she’s the host with the most!), I saw the same lovely light in her beautifully curated living room. And while both women have impeccable taste and a knack for outfitting their spaces with unique treasures, this eye-catching lamp was thankfully available just off the rack at Ikea. So now I have it, too. It’s currently hanging in my daughter’s room, but I also like the idea of using it as a table lamp in the living room. Style and versatility, for under a hundo. Maybe you’ll be influenced, too. —Stacey McLachlan, senior editor

Lineage Classique Cups, $22

Finding a great coffee cup is tough. And doubly tough if you’re a coffee snob (guilty!). I already have everyday plates and bowls from Vancouver’s Lineage Ceramics and love the feeland the heftthat the durable and timeless give off.  When creator Shuobi Wu announced they would roll out new cups handcrafted for your favourite hot beverages, I knew I had to get some for home. The 12oz Classique cup combines timeless design with durability, and comes in colours including marshmallow white, the subtlest baby blue (pictured here) and olive green. Perfect for those slow Sunday mornings enjoying a steamy mug of java by the fire.Darcy Matheson, editor in chief, BCBusiness

Fable’s Crystal Wine Glasses, $149

I’ve always lived in a chaotic little ecosystem of inherited wine glasses and “sure, this water tumbler can be a Pinot glass” logic. So actually investing in proper stemware felt wildly grown-up. And honestly? Worth it. These glasses somehow make whatever’s inside taste better (science? placebo? vibes?) and they’ve kept up with me, pour for pour, even once the wine kicks in and my hands start doing improv. Despite the animated talking and occasional near-misses, they don’t tip over dramatically or scratch if you look at them wrong. They’re tough, scratch-resistant and they keep their good looks without needing a pep talk.I’ve gotten a bunch of compliments on them, which is fun because I’ve never been complimented for a wine glass before. Hopefully these stick around for years, unlike every delicate, doomed glass that came before them. —Kerri Donaldson, assistant editor

Mova’s Robot Vaccuum, $899

I didn’t buy this because I love cleaning. I bought it because I don’t. But I do love cleanliness. Floors have always been the thing that quietly hijacks an entire weekend morning—vacuuming, dusting, mopping, moving chairs, realizing you missed a corner, starting again. The Mova robot vacuum changed that (girl) math almost immediately. I snagged it during a Black Friday sale for about $600, which absolutely made it a splurge—but one I don’t regret for a second. It’s an expensive gift that keeps giving. With my floors reliably taken care of (save for a few missed pointy corners given its shape), I can actually focus on the stuff that neverrr gets cleaned—blinds, windows, baseboards, all the nooks and crannies that usually lose out when time or energy runs short. Bonus: it has a built-in camera, so it doubles as a low-key security feature when I’m out. For a purchase I went back and forth on before hitting “buy,” it’s ended up being one of the most life-easing home upgrades I’ve made all year (and in case you’re wondering—of course I gave it a nickname)! —Mihika Agarwal, senior editor, BCBusiness

Mino Bluetooth Speaker by Lexon, $54

I quickly asked our assistant editor, Kerri Donaldson, when this would be published so I didn’t spoil the surprise for the person I bought this for. But these adorable little bluetooth speakers have been a go-to gift choice for a few years now. They’re ridiculously tiny—smaller-than-the-palm-of-your-hand tiny—but have great sound quality. They come in variety of colours (this gift recipient got one in his favourite colour, orange) and they’re perfect for anything from a day at the beach to a hotel-room jam, since they’re as carry-on friendly as they come. And while I’ve yet to test out this particular feature, it can also be used to make hands-free calls and as a remote selfie trigger—the latter perfect for said hotel-room party, right?—Anicka Quin, VP of Content
