It's March Madnessthe classic chair editionand first up it's the Egg chair vs. the Womb chair.
In the first head-to-head battle of our new March Madness series, designers Greer Nelson and Jamie Hamilton of Oliver Simon Design chat Egg chair vs. Womb chair. The History: The Womb chair was designed by architect and industrial designer Eero Saarinen back in 1948 for Florence Knoll, who asked for “a chair that was like a basket full of pillows.” (We like this guy.) Towards the end of the 1950s, another architect and designer by the name of Arne Jacobsen designed the now iconic Egg chair for his Royal Hotel project in Copenhagen.
The Womb ChairPROS: This chair was literally created to be the “most comfortable chair ever made.” If you’ve ever sat in one you’ll agree—this chair lives up to its name.CONS: Only available in a limited number of fabrics, so if you’re looking for a custom fabric or one with a print or pattern on it, this is not the chair for you.The Egg ChairPROS: It’s quite simply one of the most beautifully, sculptural chairs ever made. Its rounded lines just kind of seduce you and call your name. It’s a work of art, don’t you think?CONS: Hmmm let’s see…at almost $10,000 Canadian dollars this price point is not for the faint of heart!
