Bent walnut “seeds” and brass screens turn light into the main event, with forms that feel in motion.
Taking inspiration from the winged maple seed, lighting and furniture designer Mike Randall created the Samara chandelier ($8,000): seed-like pendants in bent black walnut are embedded with a round brass screen that breaks and diffuses light. “From the beginning, I wanted the light itself to carry visual interest,” notes Randall. After spotting a pendant from Milanese jeweller James Rivière at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Randall was inspired to rework his original design: the result is “a striking juxtaposition between the architectural and the organic.” Customizable in size, configuration and even wood finishes, the Samara chandelier mimics both nature and movement, and the bespoke design can be edited for either intimate spaces like bedrooms and living rooms or grand, vaulted showrooms.
