Interior designer Amanda Hamilton shares her top 5 tips for freshening up your space.
With the season in full throw (and we hope you’ve enjoyed the sun as much as we have these last few days), it’s time to get rid of winter remnants. We tapped in with Amanda Hamilton, creative director at Amanda Hamilton Interior Design, to get her top tips for this season. Think bright, vibrant colours, leafy greens and fresh scents, outdoor fetes, and the dreaded spring clean (it’s not so bad, we promise!).Go Neon. We don’t mean 80’s retro leg-warmers or a Flashdance marathon (that’s really more of a winter activity). This time around, the vibrant colours are popping up as playful accents everywhere from table linens to bedding. “For a hit of colour and whimsy, add touches of neon to instantly transform your home from those cool winter tones to the perfect spring space,” Hamilton says. These colours keep a fun, fresh tone—exactly what the spring season represents.Try it out with Hamilton’s own collection of Table Linens ($52-$140), the perfect touch of luster and character. amandahamiltondesign.comAdd a touch of green. Make use of your green thumb and plant some herbs inside the house— nothing says spring more than the sweet smell of lavender, fresh mint, or spice of cilantro. Plant a trough or individual pots in your kitchen window; they’re perfect for décor and to use in recipes. Hamilton also suggests terrariums to add an interesting, plant habitat to your home. In addition, hand-cut flowers like peonies, roses, hydrangea, and tulips from the garden can add a romantic atmosphere and freshen up your living space.Try out a variety of looks with these top 5 indoor garden buys like the above Grovert Frame Kit ($90) by Bright Green. brightgreenusa.comGet outdoorsy. We don’t mean mountain climbing or white-water rafting (at least not in the house), but instead Hamilton suggests you create a homey space right outside. Make use of your front yard, backyard or balcony to create opportunities for entertaining; add different levels and styles of seating for last minute BBQ’s, late-night Sangria fetes, or an evening ‘round the campfire.Need some inspiration for outdoor decor? Take a look at the Moon Island modular sofa (from $6,998) or a few of our other options from these outdoor furniture picks. manutti.comUpdate your tableware. “Make sure to have plenty of outdoor-use dinnerware like fun melamine plates and glasses,” Hamilton says. They’re perfect for hosting spring-inspired fetes at in the backyard, or to bundle up your family and friends (along with the food) for a perfect park picnic.Feeling inspired to host an evening for family and friends? Follow Bobbie-Burger-style and make entertaining simple with this easy-to-make evening menu from our June issue.Clean your closets. “Can’t get away with not adding this to the list,” Hamilton says. It’s time to purge the closet to make room for all your summer-fun accessories—store away your heavy winter jackets and boots, and store the picnic baskets or a bocce set within easy reach.Feeling overwhelmed? Try out a few of these top organization pieces to make spring cleaning easier, like Muuto’s stacked shelf system (from $169). espacedonline.com
