Wicked: For Good hits theatres this Friday, and to say we’re excited would be a bit of an understatement. Case in point, we dug into the WL archives to find spellbinding spaces that remind us of Glinda and Elphaba—from blush-toned kitchens to emerald-washed ensuites and cocktail bars that look straight out of Oz.
When we first came across this millennial pink bathroom by London design firm 2LG Studio in 2022, we were obsessulated… but at the same time, we couldn’t help but wonder how quickly it would look dated. Now that Glinda’s on our screens, we can say it’s still just as popular as ever.
Green has been trending in fashion and interior design this year, too, and looks especially great in bathrooms. Exhibit A: this Vancouver ensuite designed by Ami McKay. She went all in with emerald tiles that extend from the floor past the vaulted ceiling. “We tend to paint our ceilings white, but this creates intimacy,” she says.
The designers of these two kitchens took different paths (or should we say yellow brick roads?) when selecting cabinet colours. While Jamie Hamilton and Greer Nelson of Oliver Simon Design opted for a blushing pink hue that complements the veining in the Calacatta Vagli backsplash, Ben Leavitt of PlaidFox Studio went for a stand-out olive green.
Glinda and Elphaba forged a friendship down at the Ozdust, but we can just as easily see them dancing through life at these two cocktail bars. Calgary’s Bar Annabelle—designed by the team at McKinley Studios—is complete with pink walls, light fixtures and velvety stools. The Ste. Marie-designed Good Thief in Vancouver channels the Wicked Witch of the West with a spectacular green quartzite bar.
While there’s nothing subtle about Glinda’s bubblegum-pink dresses or Elphaba’s verdigris, these bedrooms prove that Wicked colours don’t have to be bright and bold. Studio Roslyn used rose, pink and brushed brass accents to give this beige-on-beige-on-beige Vancouver bedroom a soft, warm glow. The former Ministry of Interiors team, now Studio Enda and Brianna Hughes Interior Design, (slightly) degreenified this serene Edmonton bedroom with a coat of Farrow and Ball’s Green Smoke.
These might just be two of the most swankified salons in the West. Alana Dick of Ivory Design Company gave the Pink Label Salon in Qualicum Beach a monochrome look by coating everything in Benjamin Moore’s Aztec Lily: “We wanted to get that all-pink vibe with texture and no pattern,” she says.
As for the Formula Fig facial bar in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood… we know what you’re thinking, but no, the Wizard of Oz isn’t hiding behind those curtains.
