Designer ways to use the timeless natural material.
A lot of design trends are fleeting, but marble kitchens will never go out of style. After all, marble brings a sense of elegance and natural beauty that few other materials can match—whether used for countertops, backsplashes or islands. To prove it, we’ve rounded up five marble marvels from the WL archives. Keep on scrolling to see how the material can elevate the heart of the home.
The materials in this PlaidFox Studio-designed beach house are meant to be imperfect. The owners wanted a home that would show age and wear, and even improve with a little rough-and-tumble living. So, you can imagine the fun food prep and family gatherings that take place at this large marble island. See the before and after renovation photos.
This kitchen designed by Curtis Elmy of Atmosphere Interior Design is equal parts glam and grandkid-friendly. While practical Caesarstone covers the countertops, natural marble shows up on the lower part of the island. “It allowed us to interpret the stone in a unique way—and [the homeowner] doesn’t have to worry about it when she entertains,” says Elmy. Learn more about this stylish space.
When the marble is as nice at this Calacatta Vagli, you let it inspire the rest of the room. That’s what Jamie Hamilton and Greer Nelson of Oliver Simon Design did here, at least. The island’s blushing hue (Sherwin-Williams’s Cabbage Rose) was drawn from the veining in the backsplash. See more of this pretty pink kitchen.
Designer Erica Colpitts brought layers of texture, colour and material to this North Vancouver kitchen. From the muddy black millwork and the white oak shelving to the custom riveted hood fan and the Calacatta Oro marble countertop, every element complements each other—and also the homeowner. Peek inside this warm and welcoming kitchen.
Not a fan of shiny marble finishes? Take a cue from this kitchen designed by Project 22 Design and Murdoch and Company. Both the island and backsplash are done with Fior di Bosco—a grey Italian marble that has been honed to a matte finish. Tour this modern Whistler home.
