In this Splyce Design bathroom, designer Nigel Parish moves the mirror off-centre, opening up the counter, the view and the whole morning routine.
THE LOOK: Forever Floating
DESIGNER: Nigel Parish, principal, Splyce Design, Vancouver
We so often brush our teeth or wash our face in front of the mirror. But do we actually need to stare into our own eyes during our morning routines? Designer Nigel Parish, principal of Vancouver’s Splyce Design, argues no. In the ensuite of this oceanfront Vancouver Island home, he installed a floating oak vanity in front of a frameless picture window, with the cable-mounted mirror (and Foscarini pendant light) offset to the sink. “You have the opportunity to just… gaze,” says Parish. There’s another benefit to moving that suspended mirror to the side: having counter space in front instead of a faucet allows plenty of room for the homeowners to spread out their makeup or put down the blow-dryer mid-primp. Float on.
