The acclaimed Edmonton designer (of Pure Design and On Our Table fame) shares his secrets for making everyday life beautiful.
If you invest in one or two design classics a year, it doesn’t take too long to fill your house with the objects that inspire you. I saw some photos of the current homes of mid-century masters recently—Jens Risom, Dieter Rams—and while the buildings are well done, it is their brilliant collections of timeless furniture and objects (like the classic Jens chair and ottoman) that is truly fascinating.
Canadian lighting designers are really making a name for themselves internationally— Castor, Molo and Bocci consistently produce new pieces that are worth considering. Lighting is more trend-based than furniture, so try to source out the designer who started a particular trend that catches your eye, and you’ll have a better chance of ending up with a classic piece.
Get your hands on a Vitsoe system. If you can maintain a sparse desk, a home office can easily handle a busy wall packed with inspiring books and objects. Most of us have hoarding tendencies at some level—we don’t have to completely bury them.
If you are cycling to this party, our Hole Slab Long boards will transport nicely on your handlebars. Or accompany a classic bottle of wine with a nice corkscrew, like the sleek and refined Stelton Classic.
The editorial team at Western Living loves nothing more than a perfectly designed space, place or thing: and we’re here to tell you about it. Email us your pitches at [email protected].
