Kelowna and its surrounding region come alive in the fall with unique arts and culture events, exhibits, performances and more.
Fall is probably my favourite time of year—especially in the Central Okanagan. The air feels crisp and cozy, and the bright colours of the leaves turn any casual walk into a dream.
But it’s the arts and culture scene in the area that really makes the season. The region’s history and living culture come alive through different exhibits, performances and events. Here are the top arts and culture experiences that are worth adding to your itinerary.
Head west of Okanagan Lake to immerse yourself in local history, art and seasonal celebrations in West Kelowna. Explore and learn about the rich history and living culture of the Okanagan/syilx People at Sncewips Heritage Museum. Book a tour ahead or drop in by donation and explore the tangible exhibits and intangible oral history of the Okanagan/syilx People. Take in the west side at your own pace on a self-guided public art tour around West Kelowna. Wander the city and learn about West Kelowna’s history through murals and sculptures. Or, for a more structured activity, check out the local fall festivals. Shop local artisans, sip on seasonal wines and enjoy live music outdoors at Grizzli Winery’s Fall Fest Harvest Market on October 11 from 2 to 6 p.m.
Lake Country is buzzing with great shows and exhibitions lined up throughout the fall. The Creekside Theatre has an exciting range of upcoming musical performances, from cover artists singing classic tunes (think Led Zeppelin to Billy Joel) to Canadian concerts like Jesse Roper, Virginia to Vegas and Aysanabee. Visit the Lake Country Art Gallery for an extensive all-women lineup of work to showcase the strength and power in women’s voices, collectively and individually. Featuring 40 different female artists, wander through the Lighthouse Keeping exhibition that’s on until September 28.
Dive into fall exhibits, performances and the history of the Okanagan at any of the many cultural spots around Kelowna. The Okanagan Heritage Museum has a little bit of everything to immerse yourself in the region’s history: learn about the land’s biodiversity, step into the world of the Okanagan/syilx People or explore the Central Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame. Add some excitement to the itinerary at Actors Studio and Dinner Theatre, Kelowna’s only licensed dinner theatre (who doesn’t love dinner and a show?). Don’t miss the lineup of familiar favourites, including Sweeney Todd, the Train Wreck Comedy Show and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. End your trip with a visit to the Kelowna Art Gallery, which hosts a diverse selection of historical and contemporary Canadian pieces. Take in an art class or workshop—or visit on a Thursday when it’s free.
While the Okanagan is worth a trip in the fall for the food, wine and harvest, the arts and culture scene make it an immersive and memorable getaway.
