After three stellar product launches, Kaly Ryan’s Capella Design feels a little unstoppable. Inspired by the struggles she and her family faced when looking for products that would help her own grandfather stay in the home he loved, she and co-founder Patrick Glinski collaborate with aging-in-place specialists, occupational therapists and interior designers to create design-first products with functional needs—sturdy side tables, grab bars, shower stools—that fit right into a beautifully designed space. The Selora grab bar frame ($380) is Capella’s second Design 25 win (last year’s Corbel adjustable side table offered a convenient place to reach a cup of coffee, use a laptop or keep other items close—all from the comfort of the couch or bed). Designed with an overmounting frame, the grab bar works with both picture frames and mirrors; it’s also easily installed with a single-stud set up, and it’s capable of supporting up to 250 pounds—perfect to install by the door for taking off shoes, or near a railing-less set of steps. It’s thoughtful design that, as Ryan herself puts it, “belongs in Western Living, not a medical supply catalogue.”
