The heart of this 1976 cedar-framed home needed some love, with a rethink of its floor plan to give it a better sense of flow. Designer Peter Wilds anchored the space with a highly functional 16-foot island, perfect for both food prep and gathering around to chat with the chef, before and after the meal. Existing cedar on the lofted ceilings served as an inspiration for a warm palette, with rift-cut oak perimeter cabinets and concrete quartz perimeter counters bringing a lightness to the space, and a smart open-shelving design that doesn’t obstruct windows (also providing a pleasant spot for plants and greenery). Sculptural lighting makes a big impact here, too: two forest green, six-foot linear LED fixtures span the length of the island, accentuating the change in ceiling height as well as bringing in the colours of the surrounding parkland, while two oversized frosted glass globes perch on top of full-height cabinets, creating a warm glow at night.
