Art of Nursery by Storkcraft Is Reimagining Nursery Furniture Design

Not long before Justin L. Segal became a first-time father, he found himself inspired by the landscape, architecture and beauty of the Greek island of Santorini, where he was vacationing with his wife.

Grabbing a pen and the nearest thing he could draw on—a disposable napkin—he sketched out the original design for what would become Storkcraft’s Santorini Convertible Crib.

Led by Justin and his brother, Adam Segal, president and CEO, Storkcraft is a family-owned baby and children’s furniture company based in British Columbia. Founded in 1945 in Vancouver, Storkcraft is North America’s longest-standing name in baby cribs.

Justin’s crib idea was ambitious. It was more design-forward than any other product in Storkcraft’s history. But when he approached his brother about the design, Adam leaned into it. “Sometimes in designing furniture you have to be bold,” says Adam. “We took a chance on this crib with a strong sense that the market would react very positively to something this uniquely beautiful.”

The Santorini crib was so well received that it led to additional collections that have become mainstays within the Storkcraft portfolio, including the Casablanca, the Amalfi and the Sicily. But these design-forward pieces were so distinct that Storkcraft created an entirely new sub-brand, Art of Nursery, dedicated to luxury, grow-with-me, wanderlust-inspired, hand-sketched designs. The Santorini Crib remains the flagship piece in Art of Nursery.

“With Art of Nursery, we never set out specifically to design a new collection. These collections are the organic result of real-life moments of inspiration,” says Justin. “Inspiration can come from anywhere—a landscape, a heritage building, a piece of jewellery or even an antique automobile. Every Art of Nursery collection is authentically rooted in an appreciation of the art of the world—the beauty that surrounds us.”

Each collection in Art of Nursery begins as a hand-drawn sketch. Adam and Justin emphasize that Art of Nursery maintains a true atelier mindset: it’s about art, details, materials and quality craftsmanship, while still providing the babyhood-to-childhood value to families that Storkcraft is known for.

In this sense, Storkcraft is also leading the way in baby and children’s furniture design innovation. The Santorini and Casablanca Convertible Bassinets in Art of Nursery, for example, have a “forever lifespan.” When the child outgrows the solid-wood bassinet, it splits into two standalone pieces that live on as a toy box and a bookcase.

Fast Company recognized Storkcraft with its Innovation by Design Award in 2025 and 2024. The Casablanca Convertible Storage Crib has even ended up in the nursery of celebrity couple Barbara Palvin and Dylan Sprouse.

At the same time, safety remains paramount for Storkcraft. Every Art of Nursery piece is parent-designed and third-party tested by independent, accredited organizations to meet the industry’s rigorous safety standards. All Art of Nursery cribs are Baby Safety Alliance Verified, and all its collections are UL GREENGUARD Gold Certified.

“With Art of Nursery, we’re not trying to make luxury exclusive,” says Adam. “We’re making it something most families can have.”
