7 Reading Nooks Where We’d Love to Get Lost in a Good Book

Bookmark these beautiful ideas for your own reading nook.

There’s something especially appealing about having a dedicated spot to read. These seven nooks from the WL archives caught our eye for their thoughtful details and clever use of space. And while they may look different, each one has us wanting to settle in for a chapter—or two, or three.

Comfy Corner

Despite being situated in the home’s main living area, this reading spot still manages to feel cozy and secluded. A cushion from Haven Textile Company lends softness to the chair, jade linen curtains add a hit of colour and the tiled fireplace (filled with a selection of candles) casts a warm glow. Light Reading

While much of this DWK Interiors-designed home is dark and dramatic (we’ve previously swooned over its black kitchen and black bathroom), the reading nook takes a decidedly lighter approach. White drapes, a hammock chair and large windows give the space a bright, airy feel. Check out the rest of this stylish Calgary residence.

Page Turner

Your novel doesn’t have to be the only source of drama in your life! Inspired by the Harry Potter series, this two-storey library features checkerboard floors, a custom phoenix chandelier, arched doorways and a blue velvet tufted chaise lounge that practically begs you to curl up with a good book. Jeffrey Liu Studio

Plot Twist

Designer Jeffrey Liu divided the wide-open top floor of his clients’ three-storey townhouse into two distinct areas: a games room and a reading lounge. The latter is complete with a plush armchair and custom storage, and backdropped by a green feature wall. Learn more about this hybrid space and why it works.

First Edition

If reading is an essential part of your morning routine, take some inspiration from this North Vancouver abode—owned by former NHL goalie Martin Jones. Designer Jamie Deck of Shift Interiors hid one of the home’s most charming features, a custom coffee station, behind the cabinets in the primary bedroom. Tour the rest of this serene space.

Novel Idea

This reading nook looks as if it’s part of a luxe living room, but it’s actually part of the primary suite. Working alongside Rawlyk Developments, Mera Studio Architects reconfigured the layout so that the homeowners enter into the dressing room and then move through to the main bedroom area—where the sitting zone and fireplace create a calm retreat. Happy Accident

After reworking the floor plan of this Calgary home with the architect team at Ward Studio, designer Michelle Sander found some extra space at the top of the staircase. So, she got to work installing an inviting reading nook—complete with velvet seating and custom shelving. “It’s a little escape when the house is bustling,” she says. Take a closer look at this charming space.
