The locale became the jumping-off point for the home’s design for the team at Kelly Deck Design. “The homeowner had grown up in the area,” explains Carissa Bruhaug, lead designer on the project. “She’d always hoped to take a big old home and transform it into a beach house of her own.”It’s a look achieved with both colour and materials: the light-coloured woods, soft greys and marbled stone keep the palette cool and perfectly suited to the seaside. The main living area, anchored with a warm, charcoal-coloured bamboo silk rug, is set for casual entertaining: a Bensen Edward sofa is paired with two U-Turn chairs from the same line. The chairs swivel 360 degrees, making them both a cozy spot for sitting by the fire and, with a quick spin, an ideal place to chat with whomever is prepping dinner in the kitchen.In the nearby dining room, Catifa chairs from Arper, covered in a soft grey wool felt, are placed around a Dutch-designed Arco dining table. The wooden Seppo Koho pendant light adds just the right amount of drama, explains Bruhaug. “It’s a bit of a low ceiling,” she says, “so we didn’t want something too large to command the space. It needed to be complementary to the table and chairs, rather than be a show-stopping piece itself, and to not compete with the Bocci fixture hung from the loft, over the kitchen.”Throughout, built-in storage takes advantage of underutilized spaces: along the low wall beneath the angled roof of the loft space, and under the staircase. The mega-storage means that other surfaces can be kept clean and open—just right for a home that has become a transitioning spot for the owner, from city life to perfect days by the water.
