With a focus on Canadian manufacturers, Sandys Furniture stays ahead of the design trend curve.
A Canadian success story, Sandy’s Furniture began when Sandy Seney opened his first shop out of an old barn on Arbutus St. in 1976. From these modest beginnings, Sandy’s has grown to occupy a 100,000-square-foot space on Coquitlam’s United Boulevard.Throughout this evolution, Sandy’s has held steadfast to its roots as a family-owned-and-operated business, with Sandy’s daughter, Dayna Tukutau, taking over as General Manager in 2004. The Sandy’s Furniture family is proud of its Canadian roots, too, having proudly supported Canadian furniture manufacturers since its early days.
Like Sandy’s, Canadian furniture manufacturers have kept pace with change, and they have become trendsetters in home décor. Renowned for their wood furniture pieces, Canada’s furniture makers have met the demand for wider-ranging finishes, supplementing the once-ubiquitous dark espresso with lighter alternatives. Leading the pack are paler-toned walnuts, as seen on West Bros’ Odeon Upholstered Bed and T.H. Solid Wood Furniture’s Luxe Panels Bed with Fretwork.
Canadian furniture designers have also embraced the current leaning toward mixed media, playing with combinations of wood, metal, and glass to add both visual and tactile interest to pieces. Canadel’s Rectangular Glass Table with Pedestal, for example, tops a geometric wood base with glass to evoke twenty-first century timelessness.A brightly coloured pillow, throw, or an accent chair easily livens up a room. Canadel Downtown’s sculptural chartreuse armchair illustrates how a pop of colour can brighten a neutral room without overwhelming the space’s aesthetic.
