Let these spaces inspire your own analog escape.
Hi-fi listening bars are popping up across the West—and so are at-home listening rooms! More and more, we’re seeing designers create custom, cozy and delightfully analog spaces where audiophiles can pop on their favourite record and unwind.
Interested in adding a similar space to your own home? We’ve got just the inspo you need. Scroll down to see four lovely listening rooms from four Western Canadian designers.
A television set is conspicuously absent from designer Jeff Liu’s living room. “Growing up, my dad had a good sound system, and I loved to watch him clean and spin his records. I really wanted to recreate that,” he says. “It’s a space dedicated to reading books and listening to music.”
Vintage Italian speakers flank a cabinet packed with records and a USM Haller system, a quirky Jan Kath rug and woven Gentry Moroso sofa add a touch of softness, and a wonderful Akari Horn lamp designed by Noguchi stands in the corner. See the rest of this 778-square-foot Vancouver condo.
Wrapped in a smoky blue-grey and anchored by millwork from Precisionwerkz, this moody den from the team at Sophie Burke Design is a proper refuge—ready for listening to records, reading or simply retreating. We’re not the only ones who want to sit here and cry while listening to the new Noah Kahan album, are we? Find out why this space won a WL Design 25 award.
When Sharon Hollingsworth, designer and founder of Husk Interior Design, decided to update her 1,200-square-foot home, she made sure to accommodate all of her family’s needs. This included her children, her pet bunny (she added a built-in hutch to the dining room) and her husband, whose music equipment is stored in the oak and elm wood cabinetry. “It’s more of a home when it’s a home for everybody,” she says. Peek inside this renovated duplex.
With a built-in hammock, a carousel-inspired light fixture and string artwork, this Calgary home gives off a playful, whimsical vibe. The record room, however, is meant for relaxing. “It’s got tons of natural light, our comfiest chairs, the Persian rug,” says homeowner and RNDSQR co-founder Alkarim Devani.
