The Ultimate Guide to Calgary’s Interior Design Shops (Updated!)

Calgary is a treasure trove of interior design stores. And while there’s nothing wrong with the classics—we’re looking at you, Ikea—there’s so much more than that to be seen and shopped. Consider this the ultimate guide to outfitting your home in the YYC (we’ve even gone ahead and alphabetized it for you).

1. Bex Vintage

For a cheeky mix of mid-century modern and vintage furniture, check out this boutique on 14^th St. SW. While there is some consignment, much of the stock is purchased from families downsizing or moving, and is constantly updated. One-of-a-kind finds include chalet glass, vintage hi-ball sets, hi-fi credenzas and Danish teak wall units. Large-scale contemporary paintings from Edmonton artist Tanya Klimp round out the mix.

2. Country Living Furnishings & Design

An exhaustive range of goods for living, dining and bedrooms, all of them Canadian made with a traditional aesthetic. Sturdy oak pedestal tables, and cabinets are built to last while sofas from Stylus or Van Gogh can be customized to fit any room. In addition to art, rugs, lighting and accessories those seeking design advice can engage the service of an in-house designer.

3. Crate and Barrel

Founded in the 1960s this Chicago icon opened its inaugural 34,000-square-foot mecca in Calgary’s Southcentre Mall and has quickly become the go-to store for contemporary affordable home furnishings.

4. DaDe Loft

Inspired by the Apartment in New York’s Soho district, co-owners Darcy Lundgren and Greg Fraser have repurposed their home into a retail space where everything is for sale, including upholstered furnishings from Italy’s Moroso, Seletti Hybrid dinnerware, and mixed media pieces by Darcy Lundgren.

5. Dwell Modern and Lightform

A haven of style, Dwell caters to those who are looking for sleek timeless design with a European flair. As the exclusive dealer for France’s Ligne Roset, a large selection is devoted to their collection, including sectionals, sofas, occasional chairs, dining and bedroom furniture. With over sixty-five European brands other highlights consist of dining tables from Italy’s Bonaldo and accessories by Seletti.  Having recently expanded their showroom Lightform also caters to European designs that have stood the test of time, such as Flos, and Foscarini.

6. EQ3

Known for contemporary Canadian-made furniture, especially sofas, that feature clean lines and comfortable style. A myriad of fabric choices ranges from polycotton to leather. Storage solutions such as chests, dressers, and night stands abound. All pieces are highly customizable—good news for small-space dwellers.

7. F2 Furnishings

F2 Furnishings puts an emphasis on locally made products. Here, you’ll find something for every space in your home: designer sofas and gorgeous-yet-functional credenza’s for the living room, mid-century modern desks for the office and chic pendant lights for the kitchen—all made in Canada.

8. Iron Crow

At over 14,000 square feet, this warehouse is a hub for serious antique lovers as well as those who just love vintage. Inside, a huge assortment of pieces for every room, including the garden, office, parlor, dining and bedroom, have been carefully curated into separate vignettes. Be sure to check out the specialty artifacts from fighter jets, ships, and barber shops, in addition to antique side saddles and sporting goods, glassware and knick-knacks.

 

9. Kit Interior Objects

Anyone with a yearn for Nordic-chic will welcome Kit Interior Objects: roundup of classic modern furniture and sleek homewares, like iconic Finnish glassware from Iittala, brightly coloured floral pillows, flatware, placemats, and tea towels by Marimekko, and Skandinavisk’s candles in Hygge or Fjord scents. Iconic furnishings include Herman Miller’s Eames and Knoll’s Barcelona chairs.

10. Limitless

Limitless carries contemporary furnishings designed in Holland: modern sectional, the G-Sofa, seats 15; Eyre’s chaise lounge is comfortable but sturdy with its steel frame construction; the popular Spider Chair comes in a Phoebe and a Zoe version.

What started out twenty years ago as a fabric store has since grown to accommodate a varied selection of collections for every room. Sofas, recliners and occasional chairs from Vogel are some of the top sellers while Canadian made Geovin’s dressers and nightstands can be lacquered to match most of the Benjamin Moore paint palette. For summer you’ll find collections from Brown Jordan, Cabana Coast, and Canadian made Twist.

12. Pottery Barn

A one-stop shop for beds, sofas, tables, chairs, rugs, pillows, shelving, dishware and everything else you need to furnish your nest. Urban rustic decor with an emphasis on overstuffed, oversized sofas and chairs upholstered in comfy chenille and twills.
